For over 90 years, the Institute has established multi-disciplinary expertise and activities in entomology, weed science and plant pathology to safeguard plant health (quarantine organisms) and crop protection.
BPI scientifically covers the entire spectrum of plant protection, phytosanitary and agricultural drugs while at the same time studying and proposing measures for safety and quality in primary production as well as the minimization of its possible effects on the environment and humans. BPI conducts fundamental/applied research in the aforementioned fields. BPI is the designated Natural Authority for the coordination of the Surveys for plant health and phytosanitary control. It is authorized to conduct the evaluation of plant protection products and biocides for registration purposes. Ktima Gerovassiliou is the brainchild of Vangelis Gerovassiliou. In 1981, he started reviving the family vineyard extending over 2.5 hectares in the Papamola region of Epanomi, approximately 25 km southeast of Thessaloniki. In this unique ecosystem he planted mainly Greek, but also foreign grape varieties. The first vinification took place in 1986 at the modern winery that was built by the vineyard.
Ktima Gerovassiliou is a single private vineyard stretching over 95 hectares. The climate in the region of Epanomi is Mediterranean with mild winters and hot summers, tempered by sea breezes.
The production procedure at the winery follows all hygiene and food safety requirements, as stated by the applied Integrated Quality and Food Safety Management System that is certified according to the standards ISO 9001:2008 and ISO 22000:2005.
Educational programs, guided tours and parallel events take place based on a variety of stimuli and information provided by the vineyard, the winery, and the Wine Museum, and focus on different themes, depe
nding on the specific target group.
The Museum is part of an active viticulture and wine-making centre. The interaction of realistic and museological stimuli, both processed to revolve around a single thematic core, offers an excellent multi-dimensional learning experience. These programs are based on the active participation of children-adolescents and teachers-escorts are expected to contribute in various ways throughout the visit. The adopted approach to viti-viniculture varies according to the visitors’ age group.
In addition to tours and educational programs, throughout the wine-producing year a series of events are held with two focuses: wine and the museum.

The Laboratory of Applied Zoology and Parasitology in Agriculture was founded in 1928 (Government Gazette 112-30.6.1928/ Law 3577-28) and covers the entire range of research subjects related to morphology, biology, ecology, ethology, and population dynamics of insects. It encompasses the field of management of pests in plants and stored products. It studies the effect of the environment on the diversity of species, as well as the development of environmentally friendly methods on integrated enemies. In addition, the Laboratory provides training in the subjects of entomology, agricultural zoology, acarology, and nematology. Finally, it provides services to public and private organizations as well as to any interested professional. A number of research programs with private, national (HFRI) and European funding (e.g. LIFE BIODELEAR, Prima – ASTER) have been and are being implemented in the laboratory and a significant number of master’s and doctoral theses are prepared.
